Is Adding Your Family to Your Employer Plan Really the Best Move?

By Blaze TelferFebruary 12, 20265 min read

If you have health insurance through your employer, you're probably getting a solid deal — at least for yourself. Most employers contribute 50% or more toward the employee's monthly premium, which makes individual coverage through work one of the most cost-effective options available.

But here's where it gets tricky: adding your spouse, children, or entire family to that same employer plan is usually done at full cost to you. And that cost can add up quickly.

I've worked with families who were paying $1,200 to $1,800 per month just to add dependents to an employer plan — sometimes for coverage that wasn't even particularly strong. When we compared that to other options, the savings were significant.

This is where the concept of employer-split coverage comes in. With this approach, the employee stays on their employer's plan (taking advantage of the employer's premium contribution), while the spouse and children are placed on a separate private or marketplace plan that may offer better rates.

“Many families assume employer coverage is automatically the cheapest option. But once you add dependents, the math often tells a different story.”

For example, if a healthy spouse and two children can qualify for a private PPO plan at $600 per month instead of $1,400 through the employer, that's $800 in monthly savings — nearly $10,000 per year — often with comparable or better coverage.

Of course, this doesn't work for every family. If a spouse or child has significant health conditions, staying on the employer plan may be the better choice since employer plans can't deny coverage for pre-existing conditions. The right answer depends on your specific situation.

What I always recommend is this: before you automatically add your family to your employer plan during open enrollment, take 30 minutes to explore the alternatives. You might be surprised at what's available.

I offer free employer coverage reviews where we look at your current plan, compare the cost of adding dependents, and explore whether a split-coverage approach could save your family money while maintaining strong protection. There's no obligation — just clear information to help you make the best decision.
