When it comes to health insurance, most people assume the ACA Marketplace is their only option — especially if they don't have employer-sponsored coverage. But there's another path that many people overlook: private health insurance.
The ACA Marketplace (sometimes called Obamacare) offers plans that cannot deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions. That's a significant benefit for people with ongoing health needs. However, marketplace plans are limited to open enrollment periods, and without a qualifying life event or government subsidy, premiums can be surprisingly high.
Private health insurance works differently. These plans are underwritten based on your health, which means approval and rates depend on your current health status. For relatively healthy individuals and families, this often translates to lower monthly premiums and stronger coverage — including access to nationwide PPO networks with more flexibility in choosing doctors and hospitals.
One of the biggest advantages of private insurance is availability. Unlike marketplace plans, private coverage is available year-round for those who qualify. You don't have to wait for an enrollment window to get covered.
“For healthy individuals and families, private insurance often means better coverage at a lower monthly cost — without waiting for open enrollment.”
So who is private insurance a good fit for? Generally, it works well for individuals and families who are in good health, self-employed professionals who need to purchase their own coverage, and people who are currently paying high premiums on a marketplace plan without receiving a subsidy.
That said, private insurance isn't the right fit for everyone. If you have significant pre-existing conditions, marketplace coverage may be the better option since it guarantees acceptance regardless of health status.
The best approach is to compare both options side by side with someone who understands the details. That's exactly what I do — I help clients review their situation, compare private and marketplace plans, and choose what genuinely fits. No pressure, no sales pitch. Just honest guidance.
